In March 2007, Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, LLC broke ground on a 1,700-acre site in Greensburg, Ind., for a new $550 million manufacturing plant. The facility – Honda’s sixth auto plant and 14th production facility in North America – was slated to begin production of the Honda Civic sedan in fall 2008 and employ approximately 2,000 associates at its Decatur County location.
Providing an adequate and reliable supply of natural gas presented many challenges for a project of Honda’s size and magnitude. Vectren worked closely with Honda officials to ensure the plant’s natural gas requirements would be met in time for its target production date.
In order to meet Honda Manufacturing of Indiana’s needs, Vectren developed a plan that would meet present and future natural gas requirements for both Honda and the commercial and residential customers in Greensburg and surrounding communities. The plan involved
Honda Manufacturing of Indiana began production on schedule in October 2008 and announced plans just one month later it was transferring exclusive production of the world’s only compressed natural gas powered vehicle, the Civic GX, to the Greensburg plant. The plant produced its first Civic GX in May 2009.
