Transportation

Companies in Vectren’s Indiana service area have guaranteed access to one of the most advanced transportation networks in the nation.

Combined with the fact that Indiana is within a day’s drive of 80 percent of the US population, the state’s highway, rail, air and inland port systems ensure companies can reach their target markets in a cost-efficient, timely manner.

Ports
The state of Indiana operates an extensive inland port system.  Two state-run ports are located in Vectren’s service area along the Ohio River:  the Port of Indiana-Mount Vernon and the Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville.  The Port of Evansville and the Tell City River Port also serve companies in Vectren’s southern Indiana territory.

Highways
Indiana’s reputation as the “Crossroads of America” stems from its extensive highway and interstate system.  More major interstates intersect in Indiana than any other state in the country, including seven within Vectren’s service area.  The state’s innovative Major Moves program will also invest nearly $12 billion on new roadway construction and preservation projects in Indiana between 2006 and 2015, including the extension of Interstate 69 between Indianapolis and Evansville.

Rail
Indiana has more than 4,700 miles of rail throughout the state and ranks fifth in the United States in terms of the total volume of freight shipped each year.  Three Class I Rail Carriers – CSX, Norfolk Southern and Canadian National – operate nearly 91 percent of all rail routes within the state.

Air
There are three international airports in Indiana, including Indianapolis International Airport – home to the second-largest FedEx Express Hub in the world.  The state is also served by a number of smaller, regional airports and is in close proximity to Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport and the Louisville International Airport.
